about

I am a member of a songwriter group called Drunks In A Midnight Choir. This group, comprising twelve people, was born from the ashes of the Bird On A Wire songwriting course run by Boo Hewerdine and Fin Napier.

The twelve of us have a date in the diary every month where we supply songs we have written based on a prompt from the previous month's session. These twelve people have become an important part of my life.

Grand Canyon came from a prompt simply called 'Travel'. The song at its simplest is about my fervent desire to see the Grand Canyon before, you know, it all goes south.

But the middle section deals with travelling through life in general and how our family and friends are so important in good times and bad.

I understand this is my mentor Boo's favourite song of mine. It is lovely to sing and the work of Chris and Gustaf is exceptional.

lyrics

GRAND CANYON

I want to go to the Grand Canyon
It’s a cliché, I know
There’s something about the world out there
Makes me want to go
‘Cos it’s bigger than me
And it’s bigger than us

I want to go to the Grand Canyon
Where that river flows
We’d take a left after Angel Trail
Up to the plateau
Where the rocks burn bright red
And the sky is dark blue
I want to go to the Grand Canyon

Life’s all about journeys
And what we do here
Life’s all about seeing the smaller things disappear
It’s spending our time with those we love
And feeling a part of something more
And I know that these memories would not shine so bright without you

‘Cos it’s bigger than me
And it’s bigger than us

I want to go to the Grand Canyon
It’s a cliché, I know
We’d make our way out on Skywalk Bridge
Just as far as we can go
Take us through the air
With the stars in the sky
And the stars in your eyes
I want to go to the Grand Canyon
