about
I wrote the bass line for this years ago built on the lyrics once I had the line Heading For The City Lights.
Interestingly, I had a different chorus going into the recording process but both Chris and a songwriter friend of mine, Colin McDuff, spotted that an outro line ad-libbed on the original demo worked on its own.
And the chorus became "Baby, the stars burn bright heading for the city lights Yeah, yeah, yeah". The original chorus is buried, never to be dug up again.
This track was always going to be a bookend piece to the opening track, Birdwatching. This song is more aligned to the Christmas Market on Eyre Square in Galway. A good time to be in the city.
Also, the track was meant to fade out but some of Chris' drumrolls towards the end deserve to be heard!
lyrics
HEADING FOR THE CITY LIGHTS
Johnny Flash kicks off the rhythm where everyone can hear him
On a glorious Saturday night
And we’re walking down the street, feel the heart-exploding beat
And we’re heading for the city lights
You see everybody’s dancing, laughing or romancing
All dressed up sharp as a knife
And the young kids on the corner watching everything in wonder
As the festival bursts into life
And you know the time has come to let our souls break free
Watching as the night sky lights the way for you and me, yeah
Baby, the stars burn bright heading for the city lights
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Sally Shine heads for the square as the people stop and stare
She’s so pretty on this Saturday night
And the energy we feel moving towards the Ferris Wheel
And we’re heading for the city lights
You see the people in the sky, some are screaming, all are high
As it lifts to the where the stars all appear
Doesn’t matter what they’re thinking, either swimming or they’re sinking.
Everybody’s on the same journey here
And you know the time has come to let our souls break free
Watching as the night sky lights the way for you and me, yeah
Baby, the stars burn bright heading for the city lights
Yeah, yeah, yeah

Well gosh, Boo. That really is an album!
The first time through was wonder and delight. Now it’s just a matter of installing it into my DNA. And so repeat play is engaged. You’ve done it again! warren wigutow

Bouncy, jangly power pop with a slash of acidic shadow, as the very best twee always has. From Boston, they met at band camp (not Bandcamp). Bandcamp New & Notable Jul 2, 2019

The whole album is fantastic not a single song that I don’t love, but mostly “she’ll never be me”, and the voice of Emma is angelic ❤️❤️ mahmoud_elsayed
