about

This was the first song I wrote on John Spillane's songwriting course.

In one sentence, it's about my eldest daughter moving out of home (to go to college) in 2020. John had asked us to write a song about something that has happened in the previous week. Helpfully, my daughter had moved out the night before the course session so the feelings were still fresh.

As an aside, the reference to a spiral staircase is a nod to my favourite U2 song, Promenade, which itself, I believe, was a nod to Van Morrison, fact fans.

Gustaf's work is so empathic on this track. The lines all meshing together really pulls everything that Chris and I do together.

lyrics

PUSHING THROUGH THE DOOR

You were the first to arrive and the first to leave
You left with Bowie and Rumours, a pink box full of dreams
We walked in convoy up Newtownsmith
Passing Sally Longs where the rock gods looked on

We were pulling along bags full of the past
Walking slowly in the present, still moving too fast
Lifting your world now up the spiral staircase
Where your future is waiting. a new door to walk through

In the way that you shine,
The way that you shimmer
There are echoes of older days
There are echoes of my mother

I always knew that today would come
So I made sure that I’d be there for as long as I could
And I know when we closed that old door at home
And by pushing through the new door on your own
Saying “That’s all for now, I’ll give you a call.”

I don’t know why this has floored me, I just know that it has
I don’t know why this has floored me, I just know that it has

In the way that you shine
The way that you shimmer
There are echoes of older days
There are echoes of your mother
There are echoes of home (echoes of home)
There are echoes of me (echoes of me)
In the way that you shine (way that you shine)
In the way you will be
