about

The first song-writing course I went on was online and run by the famous Irish singer/songwriter, John Spillane, through September 2020.

John's guidance on song-writing was simple in the outlining but not necessarily easy in the delivery. I guess if it was that easy to write a song, everyone would be doing it.

That said, John's tutorage unlocked the door and enabled me to write songs. Before the pandemic, Zoom was best-known as the name of a song from Fat Larry's Band and John would probably have been gigging rather than imparting wisdom on songwriting. Strange days indeed. Most peculiar, Mama.

Swimming was the first song I wrote with my better half in mind. To say she loves the sun is an understatement of an understatement.

The song is also about family occasions including trips to the beach, in this case, Dogs Bay in Roundstone on Ireland's west coast and is the best beach I have been on. If you ever, ever get a chance to go, you'll see why I'm making a fuss.

The tempo I had in mind for this song was the Kate Bush track, 'Hounds Of Love'. And sure enough, Chris was able to find Pete Harvey from his black book, whose cello work ensures that this does not flag in the slightest.

Gustaf Ljunggren added his woodwind and immediately understood the ebbs and flows of the song.

lyrics

SWIMMING

Let’s go swimming in the ocean
Salt and sea spray on our skin
It feels like years since we have been here
It feels like years since we jumped in

Hear our crew laugh as they splash
Liquid sunshine through the air
It’s been too long since we have been here
It seems like years since we jumped in

And here today means you and me
Here any day means you and me
Dog’s Bay will always mean you and me
These days always mean you and me, oh
Let’s go swimming in the ocean
Let’s go swimming in the ocean

Driving home as the sun gets tired
Its rays still tangled in your hair
It says “This woman is one of us
Like Sol and Apollo years ago.”

And here today means you and me
Here any day means you and me
Dog’s Bay in the sun means you and me
Dog’s Bay in the rain means you and me
These days will always mean you and me
These days will always mean you and me, oh
